This past weekend on Sunday 14th February 2010 cadets of the Aberdeen Wing took part in the inter squadron X-country event held at Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen.

1297 Stonehaven had a number of cadets take part and enjoyed the day which was a nice sunny but cold day. with 1 cadet making the Wing team.

so Congrats to Cadet Dan Moir for coming 4th and making the Wing team which will go on down to region down in Livingston. 2 members of staff were there to help Marshall the event CI's Mr Murdoch & Mr Cooper were there to help out.

Today 1297 took part in Stonehaven's Annual Remembrance Parade.

The Service was held at the local South Church in the Town. The Weather for the day was Cold but clear and crisp and was largely spectated as usual. then once the Parade made their way back to the Square they then made their way up to the War Memorial up on the Black hill for the Wreath laying and a small service.

Once back everyone was invited back to the British Legion for Warm Soup & Sandwiches.

Westhill Swimming pool, Westhill Aberdeen

Today was the Wing Swimming Gala and it featured many of the Wing's Squadrons and was very well contested with many medals being won across the whole wing.  Stonehaven entered 2 teams. A junior boys and senior boys team.  Both sets of lads did their very best and enjoyed the afternoon greatly. In the Junior team were Cpl Joe Gray winning 2 Silver medals, Cdt David Cooper, and Cdt Sam Jones also winning a Silver medal.

In the Seniors the team consisted of Sgt Andrew Duncan And Cdt Dan Moir sadly for cdt Moir he had to withdraw from his second event due to injury but enjoyed the day otherwise. The Cdts were helped by 3 staff. those were FS(ATC) James Brown, CI Scott Cooper and Cdt FS Drew Robertson. Many thanks to those who helped and took part.

The following is the Continued Story of Bisley 2009 by Cdt Dan Moir.

On Saturday we did the usual breakfast/shower/prep the rifles/sleep routine. We were on the second detail and had time to catch up with some sleep so that we were in the element for shooting. As usual Moir went first and shot a 30.1 and returned to the team with a smile on his face. The rest of the team performed fantastically in the 300m and likewise at the 500m, where we had scores of 31.2, 34.4, 32.3 and 29.1. There was a lot of shooting on Saturday and we didn't finish until around 5pm. After the rifles were cleaned and put away to the armoury, we went for tea. When we came back Mr Campbell dropped us off to look at the Cadet 100 scores, he said "Do not get your hopes up", and so we didn't. After an anxious walk over to the score board, Cpl Sangster's eyes began to glow, and his cheeky smile appeared, he bellowed out "I'm 99th" and 99th he was.

The whole team sprinted to the staff accommodation to inform Mr Campbell and Mr Murdoch, when they heard the news, they too joined in without celebration outside their accommodation. We celebrated throughout the night until the rain came on. This rain was the worst rain I have ever experienced.

On Sunday one night of rain, and one wet tent was enough to make the team in a bad mood in the morning, in the end Mr Campbell binned the tent. There was one final team shoot to do on the Sunday, which went well for most of the team. The final parade came, where our Cpl Sangster was presented with his Cadet 100 badge.

After getting our kit onto our bus, we said goodbye to Bisley until next year, where we will return and get several cadet 100s and finish in a fantastic position. Now came the dreaded 10 hour journey back home, we had done our jobs.

We came down as 4 cadets and 2 staff, and we left as a team. Huge thanks to all staff that took us down to Bisley and coached us over the week. I speak for all of us when I say we had the best time of our lives.

The Following Story is the events of Bisley 2009 as written by Cdt D Moir

Bisley 2009

1 Week, 5 Cadets, 2 Staff, 1 Competition.

Cpl Sangster, Cpl Gray, Cdt Moir, Cdt Henderson and Cpl Rennie (865 Sqn), Accompanied by Flt Lt Campbell and CI Murdoch, Headed down to RAF Leuchars on Monday 6th of July 2009. We picked up our rifles from the armoury and began to get into the zone. Firing on the Leuchars 25 meter range, we all managed to pull off some nice shooting which we think both staff were pleased about.

We awoke the Tuesday morning and headed to Barrybudden 500 meter range for some real Bisley practice. Over the day, the scores began to soar as we all began to master our breathing and positions, Bisley was looking good.

The Wednesday came, as did a 12 hour bus journey. The bus ride passed very quickly due to the many laughs of Lee Evans and the cadets ourselves. So after 12 hours, countless numbers of stops, we arrived at Bisley. We got unpacked and erected a mammoth tent and began to unpack our things. We went to bed at about 12am due to all the excitement, and had to get up at 5.30am.

On Thursday we awoke to a lovely morning and the motivation for some good shooting. After we had eaten breakfast at the Pirbright, we headed over to the 500meter range at Bisley. We stayed there for a few details and then we headed over to the 900meter and 1000meter range for the V competition.

900meters was a success for the 4 shooters, Cpl Sangster at 35/51 and Cdt Moir on 35.1/50. 1000 meters was much more challenging, however Cpl Sangster achieved a 44.1/51 score and came 4th in the V competition over all. He was congratulated by the Air Commodore on his fantastic score.

When we returned to the camp site, it was flooded with new cadets, all of which we soon became friends with. That night we played a lot of football, met a few more cadets, and decided to have a shower so that we were ready for the first day of the Inter service cadet shooting competition.

Friday had come and it was Cpl Gray's birthday. We were all very nervous about the competition. But after some encouragement from CI Murdoch and Flt Lt Campbell, we were all ready to show Bisley what 1297 can do. Cdt Moir was first up, he quoted “I am very nervous, but the encouragement of my fellow team mates has given me inspiration to do my best", and his best was what he did. After a successful start from the team, we moved back to 600meters. This was much more challenging with some low scores, but nonetheless we kept the team motivation and enthusiasm up. When we arrived back at camp, Cpl's Sangster and Rennie had bought Jo a cake and candles, while Cdt's Moir and Henderson rounded up the camp to come and sing happy birthday to Jo.
